South East is bordered on the north by Highway 401, on the east by Lakeridge Road, on the south by Lake Ontario, and on the west by Harwood Avenue. This waterfront community is one of Ajax’s central neighbourhoods, with the downtown area of Ajax centred at the intersection of Bayly Street and Harwood Avenue.

Real Estate

South East real estate features an attractive combination of the comforts of suburban living and the natural beauty of the Lake Ontario shoreline. Plenty of South East real estate MLS listings are situated quite close to the lakeshore, with easy access to the waterfront trail and excellent views.

There are plenty of parks near South East homes for sale, most notably the Ajax Waterfront Lakeside Park with its scenic trails and the nearby Paradise Park. These parks are unique for their combination of playgrounds, sports fields, and other park staples with all the fun of being at the beach. There are also inland parks such as Kinsmen Park and the John A. Murray Park.

In-demand South East real estate is perfect for anyone looking for a neighbourhood that can provide everything they could want for a growing family. Whether one is after a grocery store or a fun family trip to the beach, South East and the surrounding neighbourhoods can fill almost any need. The city of Toronto is also under an hour away, so anyone wanting to explore the big city does not have to go too far out of their way.

South East homes for sale include an array of detached multi-level homes and spacious townhouses in neat subdivisions. Sought-after waterfront properties with views of the lake can be found along Lakeview Boulevard and Ontario Boulevard.

Ajax probably would not have become the town it is today if it were not for its contribution to the war effort during the Second World War. In 1941, a Defence Industries Limited shell plant opened, spanning 2,985 acres and employing over 9,000 men and women. People were drawn to the budding town of Ajax from all over Canada thanks to the comparatively high wages and good working conditions that the plant offered. Although the plant closed in 1945, most of the workers had put down roots in Ajax and elected to stay.

Getting Around

Several major roads run through South East. Highway 401 serves as the northern border of South East, and provides a fairly direct route to Toronto. Other major roads include Bayly Street/Regional Road 22, Harwood Avenue/Regional Road 44, and Salem Road/Regional Road 41.

For rail commuters to Toronto, the Ajax GO station is located less than ten minutes away. Durham Regional Transit operates bus routes in the area, all of which make stops at the GO station.

Shoppers do not have to go very far at all to find their favourite retailers and restaurants. There are clothing shops, grocery stores, restaurants, banks, video rental stores, and many other businesses along Harwood Avenue. The Rio Can Durham Centre (90 Kingston Road) is located just north of Highway 401, and features many big-name fashion retailers.

There are many elementary schools in South East, particularly in neighbourhoods situated near Harwood Avenue. These include public schools, such as the Carruther’s Creek Public School, as well as Catholic schools, such as St. Bernadette.

One great appeal of South East real estate is the wide variety of ways to have fun outdoors and stay active. There is plenty of opportunity for hiking and bicycling, thanks to the many paved trails in South East. The Waterfront Trail features six kilometres of fantastic lakeshore views, and the Carruthers Creek Trail runs through both residential and forested areas.

For golfers, the Carruthers Creek Golf Centre (650 Lake Ridge Road) is a weekend destination. This facility features two scenic tree-lined courses, as well as wedding and banquet hall rentals.

There are plenty of festivals and events to attend in the area, as well. In the winter, for example, the Ajax Santa Claus Parade goes through the downtown area, with colourful floats, bands, and, of course, Santa Claus.
