The town of Ajax grew up around the Defense Industries Limited shell plant that opened during World War II, and Ajax’s military-influenced history shows. The name of the town itself comes from the name of a British Warship, the H.M.S. Ajax, which participated in the a significant British naval victory against the Germans in the war at the Battle of the River Plate. Although the plant was closed in 1945, the steam plant that powered it remained, and still stands in the downtown area of Ajax today.
