Central West is bounded on the north by Rossland Road, on the east by Westney Road, on the south by Highway 401, and on the west by the Pickering/Ajax border.

Central West real estate saw quite a bit of development in the 1970s and ‘80s and onward, particularly in the Westney Heights vicinity north of Highway 2 and just south of Rossland Road. Central West MLS listings in this area feature fairly large detached single-family homes.

In the southwestern part of Central West is Pickering Village, a historic little village featuring both charming heritage properties from the mid 1800s, when the town was almost entirely a rural area, as well as newer developments. History

Although many Central West homes for sale are quite new, many of the houses in Pickering Village has been around since the nineteenth century. This area was originally a Quaker settlement, first settled in 1807 by Timothy Rogers, who purchased 800 acres of land for his family and several others. It was officially incorporated in 1953 as the Village of Pickering.

In 1974, the Regional Municipality of Durham was created, and Pickering Village, was amalgamated into Ajax—despite sharing a name with the neighbouring Town of Pickering. The name of the tiny former municipality was changed to Pickering Village to avoid confusion.

Transportation

Central West real estate is ideal for commuters to Toronto, as the neighbourhood is bisected by Highway 2 and bordered on the south by Highway 401. Durham Region Transit runs a few bus routes through the area, all of which make stops at the Ajax Go Station.

Ajax is notable for its friendliness to cyclists: as part of a Bicycle Friendly Community initiative, the town has been offering special amenities for cyclists at select businesses, bicycle shelters, and trails connecting to public transit. Pickering Village in particular is a convenient destination for cyclists.

Retail and Schools

Pickering Village offers a unique shopping experience, with its over one hundred locally owned businesses. Old Kingston Road is the only historical main street in Ajax, and is lined with quaint shops and excellent restaurants. The St. Francis Centre, a restored historical church located at 78 Church Street South, is a performance venue offering live music and other entertainment.

Shoppers looking for big-name stores need only go a few minutes away to the Rio Can Durham Centre (90 Kingston Road East) where retailers such as Target and The Home Depot can be found.

There are several elementary schools located in Central West, offering education options both secular and religious, as well as one Montessori school. There is also one secondary school, Pickering High School (180 Church Street North).

Entertainment

For hockey and skating enthusiasts, the Village Arena (100 Church Street North is worth a visit. The ice skating arena is available to the public from September to April, and during the summer the concrete floor of the arena is available for in-line skating and ball hockey. The space also hosts art shows and trade shows during the year, as well as dance events.

For golfers, there is the Riverside Golf Club (837 Riverside Drive). The scenic 9-hole golf course is available for booking by businesses and groups, and offers a family-oriented clubhouse and tournaments.
