Holland Landing is a community in the town of East Gwillimbury, situated in the northern part of the Regional Municipality of York, in south-central Ontario. Like many communities in Canada, the historic Yonge Street is the main road in this town.

East Gwillimbury includes five urban areas known as Holland Landing, Mt. Albert, Queensville, River Drive Park and Sharon, which are disconnected by hundreds of acres of gently rolling hills and sunbaked farm fields. Holland Landing features the town’s largest population although; Queensville is estimated to turn into the largest community in the town.

The East Holland River flows through the village and offers many marinas for recreational boats. Most of Holland Landing's domestic economy is based on the service industry, in addition to some manufacturing.

History

In 1793, Governor John Graves Simcoe stumbled upon St. Albans, which would be the future site of Holland Landing. He believed this area would be an ideal shipping and defense point between York (which is now Toronto) and Georgian Bay. Holland Landing was given its name after Samuel Holland.

The town hadn’t been formed until the early 19th century and was settled by the same Quaker colonists as nearby Newmarket and Aurora. In 1815, a population of immigrants from Selkirk, Manitoba arrived in Holland Landing after a disagreement between them and the Métis.

There was an idea to link a canal to Lake Simcoe and the Trent-Severn Waterway, which was approved and started construction in 1906. Holland Landing would

join Newmarket and Bradford. It was nearly done in the summer of 1912 when the new government of Robert Borden stopped the project.

The plan was abandoned and earned it the name "The Ghost Canal." It endures to serve as a historical landmark.

Transportation

Furthermore, the village has Monday to Saturday bus service offered by GO Transit route 68 and York Region Transit route 52. The East Gwillimbury GO train station is situated in the southeast corner of Holland Landing, offering weekday commuter train service.

Retail and Schools

Although there are no main shopping centres located within the township, a short drive to the Town of Newmarket can lead you to many shopping opportunities. Upper Canada Mall is located close to Holland Landing and is the place where most residents go to do their shopping. This mall features over two hundred shops and services and is flanked by some of the largest companies.

Within East Gwillimbury, the communities of Mt. Albert and Sharon feature old-fashioned main street shopping corridors that present locally owned shops and restaurants, in addition to professional offices.

Entertainment

Entertainment attractions in Holland Landing can be found within and also outside of the community. The Holland Landing Public Library branch (19513 Yonge Street) and the Mount Albert branch (19300 Centre Street) feature programs for the entire family. There are theatre groups, writing contests, as well as arts and crafts so something for everyone can be experienced.

Also nearby is the Holland Landing Conservation Area, which is immediately to the east of Anchor Park. The trails in this conservation area are accessible from the parking lot of Anchor Park.
