History

In 1821, Quakers from Vermont named Samuel and Rufus Birchard purchased parcels of land, and by 1850, a township had been established. The settlement was formerly called Birchardville, yet the name was subsequently changed to Mt. Albert, after Prince Albert, in recognition of his visit to Upper Canada in 1860.

Businesses were mainly agricultural, with grist, flour, woolen and lumber mills sited along the Mt. Albert Creek. The first identified store was erected in 1850 to allocate dry goods to the inhabitants and neighbouring farmers.

Housing developments gradually stretched the original community in the mid-to-late 20th century, first throughout the 1970s in the south and east sections. Housing development resumed in the late 1990s swelling to lands north west of the core of Mt. Albert. This development was first established in 1995.

Transportation

Getting around Mt. Albert is simple with York Region Transit, which runs bus service on Leslie and Yonge Streets. It is roughly a 20-minute bus ride to the Newmarket Go bus terminal, which has a connecting route to the City of Toronto. Motorists’ enjoy quite easy access to Highway 404, which is located just a few minutes south of East Gwillimbury. The commute to Toronto by car, takes about 45 minutes.
