Uxbridge City Guide

Uxbridge is a township in the Regional Municipality of Durham, located in south-central Ontario, in the Greater Toronto Area. The major centre is the community of Uxbridge through there is other communities located within the township. Coppins Corners, Goodwood, Leaskdale, Sandford, Siloam, Victoria's Corner, and Zephyr are all part of the overall Uxbridge neighbourhood.

Real estate in Uxbridge is situated in a predominantly rural township featuring a breathtaking, charming landscape of the Oak Ridges Moraine. The rolling topography that overpowers this town is sprinkled with agriculture, livestock, and horse farms. These picturesque farms are surrounded by pure woodlots, and conservation areas that join to create idyllic scenery.

History

Quakers from Pennsylvania settled in Uxbridge in 1806. The 1821Quaker Friends Meeting House was the hub of this pioneer neighbourhood. It is currently open to the public during the summer, on the first Sunday of each month.

The 1820s, and ‘30s, witnessed a new wave of settlers arriving in Uxbridge from Britain. When the local post office was opened in 1836, the name Uxbridge was selected. This name comes from Uxbridge, Middlesex, England, and is thought to be derived from a Saxon tribe.

The Grand Trunk Railway established headquarters in Uxbridge in 1871 and the town faced a new era of growth and prosperity and it was incorporated as a town in 1885. Today, the Uxbridge Train Station is a fraction of the historic York-Durham Heritage Railway.

Transportation

MLS listings might mention that the Go Transit bus station, situated in downtown Uxbridge on Toronto Street includes stops along Highway 47, south through the town of Goodwood. From Goodwood, this service runs directly to downtown Toronto’s Union Station which takes about an hour and a half.

Commuters can also drive to the Stouffville Go Train Station which is about 15 minutes from Uxbridge and the train ride from Stouffville to downtown Toronto takes about one hour.

For motorists, the drive into Newmarket takes about 20 minutes and the drive to the northeast end of Toronto takes roughly 30 minutes.

Retail and Schools

Shopping in Uxbridge is as great as it gets in a quaint and charming shopping district that happily displays historic street signs and cheery banners. There is plenty of free parking along this stretch and shops ranging from furniture stores to home decor shops, flower shops, gift shops, book stores, music stores, and clothing boutiques as well as financial institutions, convenience stores, grocery stores, cafes and restaurants.
